Atlanta, GA – Internal emails revealed that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a prominent medical U.S. pediatrics organization, colluded with the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH), an activist organization, to push for more access to children’s transgender interventions. In a separate revelation, unsealed court documents showed that Biden Administration health officials, including Adm. Rachel Levine, assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, urged WPATH to remove age limits for transgender interventions out of fear of legal and political fallout. WPATH obliged despite it violating its own process.
Dr. Michael Artigues, President of the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), released the following statement:
“We are appalled that the AAP and top U.S. health officials put political interests ahead of science and evidence-based healthcare when it comes to children suffering from gender dysphoria, and that WPATH colluded with both. Their actions show that these organizations and the Biden Administration are not truly interested in the health and well-being of children and will stop at nothing to push their political agenda. We call on everyone who is concerned about children’s health to sign the Doctors Protecting Children Declaration that we announced earlier this month.”
Harmful interventions on children with gender dysphoria have been linked to serious long-term risks associated with the use of social transition, puberty blockers, masculinizing or feminizing hormones, and surgeries. For example, puberty blockers permanently disrupt physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. Testosterone use in females and estrogen use in males are associated with dangerous health risks across the lifespan including, but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heart attacks, blood clots, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Further, genital surgeries affect future fertility and reproduction. These interventions do nothing to improve the mental health of children and adolescents.
Our Doctors Protecting Children Declaration (www.DoctorsProtectingChildren.org) calls on prominent medical organizations in the U.S. to immediately stop the promotion of social affirmation, puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries for children and adolescents who experience distress over their biological sex.
