Atlanta, GA – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the United States of America v. Skrmetti case which challenges Tennessee’s law that protects children from the harms of transgender interventions. The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) filed an amicus brief in support of the current Tennessee law alongside the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, American Association of Christian Counselors, Association of American Physicians & Surgeons, Catholic Medical Association, and Christian Medical and Dental Association.
Dr. Jill Simons, Executive Director of ACPeds released the following statement:
“We must keep the true health and well-being of children at the forefront of the discussion about transgender interventions. Puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and so-called “gender transition” surgeries are harmful and dangerous procedures that alter children’s lives physically or psychologically. We hope the Supreme Court will do the right thing and allow Tennessee to protect its vulnerable children.”
The amicus brief outlines the issues with gender incongruence and dysphoria in children. First, so-called changing your sex is biologically impossible. This dysphoria points to a mental health issue, not a bodily one. In most cases, gender dysphoria desists with natural puberty.
