Treasurer: Richard Sandler, MD, FCP

Dr. Richard Sandler serves as ACPeds treasurer, and as co-chair of the Prolife Council.  After nuclear engineering training at the University of Michigan, Dr. Sandler served on the US Senate Environment Subcommittee for four years, before attending medical school at Michigan State University, followed by post-graduate training in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital, with additional research training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He has a wide range of clinical and leadership experience, including a year in the Cambodian refugee camps during the “killing fields”, Vice Chair of Pediatrics and Chief of GI at Rush University Medical Center, and more recently at Nemours Children's Hospital. Current positions include Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida.  As an inventor, Dr. Sandler has 12 issued US patents.  Dr. Sandler has authored or co-authored 197 publications (including a book on medical care of refugees published by Oxford University Press).  He recently led a coalition of 700 Florida physicians in opposition to a proposed Florida constitutional amendment enshrining the right to abortion until birth.  He’s married (39 years), and has three grown sons (including a nuclear power Naval Officer, and an Army Ranger infantry officer), and has two grandchildren.  Music is a passion, especially as a cellist.
